  Pomskies are a gorgeous designer breed made for small families wanting to keep their dog indoors with them. They were originally designed to mix the characteristics of the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky. This keeps them small as well as giving them the famous gorgeous appearance of the husky. Pomsky puppies are very protective of their owners and family members. If you have a family of small children you don’t have to be worried. Pomskies take care of each family member whether they are big or small. But, just like any other dog breed there are some things you need to keep in mind when you bring a Pomsky into your home. Pomskies shed a medium amount of hair and need a bath once every two weeks. It is also very common for your Pomsky to whine the first couple weeks after being adopted, but this is normal and usually goes away over time. Whining may be caused by separation anxiety, if it is there are ways to help your dog get past them. If you are a previous dog owner, you know how hard it is for your pet to get used to their new home. The environment they live in is entirely different than what they are used to, and this could even cause anxiety in your pup. That is why the first month is supercritical for your puppy. New expectations will be in place and new standards. Making sure that you have a clear structure and routine is very important when you start to become a Pomsky owner, and it will eventually help you have less stress when you take care of your pet.  Are there things I can do before I bring my dog home? Dog Proof the House You should first make sure you have a doggy station with all your Pomskies food bowls, food, and toys. When you have an area ready for your pup, this way they will feel more at home and welcomed. A new environment can make your puppy is scared and uncomfortable. To help your Pomsky feel at home, ask the previous owner questions about the environment your Pomsky lived in before. Try to have things in the house that will make your dog feel at home and comfortable. Use items that are similar to what your dog is used to at his previous home. The next step I suggest is that you have your house dog-proofed and ready to go. Dogs tend to play with electrical cords and easy to reach objects. The steps you take for your new dog are similar to the procedures that a babysitter would take. You do not want any small objects that your Pomsky could choke on lying around the house. Do not leave out any harsh chemicals out. Make sure that plants are placed in an area that your dog won't be able to break or tip, and have baby gates around the area you will mostly have your dog located in.  Be Prepared at Pick-up Have your ID card and phone number with you when you pick up your Pomsky. If your Pomsky is microchipped, make sure that you have all your information with the chips company just in case. Sometimes rescue shelters will have already provided this.  What do I do when my Pomsky gets home? Training your Pup You need to start training your puppy the same week it comes into your home. If you are accepted for one of our Pomsky Puppies, you will have an option to let us train your amazing Pomsky leaving the hard work to us. If not, there are a lot of tools and options, and you can take to make self-training your Pomsky easier. The sooner you begin to train your Pomsky; the more comfortable and better behaved your Pomsky will act. Take your time to find any words that you would like to train your Pomsky to react with. Make sure to give the list to anyone that will be around the dog to make life easier for you while training your dog.  First Steps Picking up your Pomsky When you pick up your Pomsky it is important that you are calm and relieved of stress. Be prepared beforehand of what actions you want to take during particular situations. Ask questions like what food you should give your Pomsky, how he likes to be greeted, and any other information you think is useful. During the Drive When you are driving home, make sure to have something for your dog to be contained in whether it's a small crate or a kennel. Some dogs get motion sickness, so you must drive as smooth as possible and stay by your Pomskies side during the drive. The First Day The first thing you should do when you get home is show your dog where he will be going to the bathroom and the area his food will be located. Even if your puppy has already been trained, new sounds and smells can throw it off track, so you must be patient with your Pomsky. If accidents do occur outside of the toiletry area stay calm and bring your dog to the potty area immediately. Moving is stressful for your dog, and that is why the first day and first impressions are so crucial for it. Give your Pomsky time to walk around and get used to its new home. Do not introduce your dog to strangers on the first day as this can be very confusing to your dog. Make sure that children are not overwhelming your dog. It is okay to introduce your Pomsky to your children, but their first impressions with your children will be super important as well. Start a Schedule Get a schedule put together and start to incorporate it throughout the first day and the following month. If you can keep the same routine and schedule for the coming days, your pup will be easy to train. The First Two Weeks Award good behavior Remember your Pomsky does not know what is wrong or right. To help them know the difference, make sure you are rewarding your Pomsky with treats whenever you catch them doing something useful like sitting quietly or playing with its toys. Throughout the first month, you will want to reward good behavior and give your puppy less attention to bad behavior. Pomskies love attention and whatever attention they receive they will want more of it.  Make sure you remain calm as much as possible and do not raise your voice around your Pomsky. Raising your voice makes your dog feel it is okay for it to bark or whine. If you have a soft kind voice it will help your dog become calmer and this way you won't have to worry about disturbing your neighbors.
Ask the previous owner about any training equipment that was used while your Pomsky was there. Try to incorporate objects they are used to in their training. Also, remember to ask about any training words that they may have already used while they were at their old home. The Rest of the Month This is when your dog's true personality starts to show, and it may become more hyper or energetic. You must continue to stick to your schedule and procedures. Don't let your Pomsky decide when you do certain activities but also do not make it wait longer than it needs to for exercise and playtime, same goes for food and breaks. Get a checkup Go to the vet to make sure that your Pomsky is looking healthy. Ask your vet if there is anything you should be doing to help your Pomsky stay in shape and get the nutrition it needs. During the last few months, you will also be setting more and more standards for your Pomsky. Make sure that you are not letting your Pomsky get away with bad behavior during these days but do not raise your voice or use a harsh tone for longer than a few seconds. Welcome to part two of our pomsky training mini-series. In this mini-series, we’re giving you bits and pieces from our Pomsky Training Book to help you train the perfect pomsky. Pomsky training tips These are must read tips BEFORE you begin training. Five pomsky training tips:
Start Young Start training as soon as your pomsky comes home. The younger your pomsky is the easier it will be to train. Your pomsky needs to know at a young age that the owner is the one that provides value. When the pomsky behaves, the owner is the one that provides praise, the owner gives treats and the owner decides when the pomsky can play. Remember to start with the basics. Get the basic behavioral training and commands down first; these are absolutely the most important aspect of a well-behaved pomsky, don’t get too excited about teaching your pomsky party tricks. Even though they may be boring they are crucial to the harder commands. Don’t expect your dog to learn 5 new commands in one day. Understanding that the process is slow is important. Training cannot be rushed. Training a pomsky is a lifelong task. It’s important to start small and work your way up. Start with the priorities such as recall, sit, stay, where to potty, when to eat and not to beg. Once you master the simple commands and behaviors, it will be much easier to move onto the complex tricks and advanced commands. Use Treats Treats are an effective method of keeping your Pomsky’s attention. Think of treats as a training tool, not a bribe. Use treats to your advantage and teach your pomsky early that they will be rewarded for behaving. Most Pomskies are highly food motivated. Use that to your advantage when training and trying to keep their attention. We highly recommend using treats to train your pomsky. Keep Sessions Short Short training sessions always work best. Training is mentally stimulating, you don’t want your pomsky to tire and become frustrated with the training. Keep your training session short, no longer than 10 to 15 minutes a couple times per day. Any longer than 15 minutes and you run the risk of doing more damage than good, you’ll lose your pomskies attention and you’ll end up teaching the pomsky to be distracted rather than engaged. Here at Brookside Pomsky we train ours for approximately 10 min sessions twice a day and have great results. This does not include the time it takes to potty train, crate train, and exercising the puppy. Be Consistent Consistency is key. Pomsky breeders agree that lack of consistency is the number one biggest reason that pomsky owners fail to train their pomskies. Consistency means you start training and stick to it. You should be consistent in all of the following:

Whether you are training, giving a command or playing with your pomsky, engagement means your pomsky is completely and totally focused on you. One way to get your pomsky completely engaged is for him to get his energy out before training sessions begin. If he's too active or excited, he won't listen. Go on a quick run or walk before your training session begins. A pomsky that is engaged wants to be with you and wants what you have, whether you have a favorite toy or a treat, the pomsky is fully focused on you and only you. An engaged pomsky is more interested in you than anything else in the world. Without engagement it’s impossible to even begin training your pomsky; if your pomsky is not engaged they will not learn, they will never be fully trained, and the future behavior of the pomsky will be jeopardized. If you don’t have your dog’s eyes, you don’t have your dog. Some pomsky owners refer to this as “respect” because a disengaged pomsky appears disrespectful, ignoring your commands and disregarding you in general. This is a common misconception. Your pomsky is not disrespecting you; it’s just not engaged with you. Your Pomsky has learned that other things are more interesting than what you have to offer. Engagement must be taught before any other training. Pomskies that learn engagement as their first behavior become much easier to train; it creates a positive attitude towards learning and training and creates a stronger bond between the Pomsky and owner. F1 Pomsky - is when the Mother of the Pomsky is a Husky and the Father is a Pomeranian (This shouldn't ever be reversed , the mother should always be bigger) F2 Pomsky - is when both parents mother and father are F1 Pomsky (The grandmother is a Husky and the Grandfather is a Pomeranian ) F3 Pomsky - is when both parents mother and father are F2 Pomskies or if mother or father is F2 and the mother or father is an F4 or F5 then the puppy is still considered and F3 Pomsky (See picture below) F1b Pomsky - B stands for backcross when a F1 Pomsky crosses with a purebred Pomeranian or Siberian Husky (75% Pomeranian and 25% Siberian Husky or 25% Pomeranian and 75% Husky) Remember the mother should always be bigger for the dogs safety. F1X is when a Pomsky is crossed with an American Eskimo dog and or German Spitz. You can have both breeds or just one breed crossed with a pomsky in order for it to be considered an f1x Pomsky American Eskimo Dog and German Spitz are also known as a Pomsky, however we only have Siberian Husky and Pomeranian in our lines because we prefer that look and temperament, which make ours 50/50  I often get asked if an F2 or F3 Pomsky is smaller then an F1 Pomsky?
No, generation doesn't guarantee size. The size is generally based on the size of the parents, however you can get a large (when full grown) Pomsky puppy out of small Pomsky parents or a small Pomsky puppy out of large Pomsky parents. This is because we are breeding small (4-7 lbs) Pomeranian with a big (35-51) Siberian Husky. A good breeder wont guarantee size but they can tell you puppies expected adult weight based on current weight, past puppies, and experience. We've had two F2 puppies leave our home at 8 weeks old, both weighing 3 lbs. Their full grown weight was very different. One little boy weighing only 12 lbs and the other 22 lbs. Both dogs where completely healthy. I do believe this can be caused by over feeding or free feeding, however this was not the case with these two Pomskies. Ive seen a 20lb F1B (75% Husky & 25% Pomeranian) Pomsky which is not very common but this is possible. I also own a couple F1 Pomskies that weigh about 15 lbs full grown and F1 pomskies that weigh 25-30 lbs. Pomskies come in a large variety of sizes. Dog Bed- We use both Mud River Crate Cushion inside the crate and K9 Ballistics Chew Proof Elevated Dog Bed outside of the crate. Weve also used the MidWest Homes for Pets Ombre Dog Beds inside the crate Kennel – While you Pomsky puppy is in the potty training stage, I like to use a medium size kennel with a divider, if the kennel is too big the puppy will have more accidents inside, but if the kennel is too small, puppy will be claustrophobic. Dog Shampoo – I like to change it up a little, so I found a few that I really like. My favorite is the Nuvet Tee Tree Shampoo, The smell is amazing! I also like to use the Nuvet Odor control pet shampoo. My favorite one is the Aromatherapy Shampoo & Conditioner for Pets Dog Shampoo, Medicated Oatmeal Dog Shampoo & Pet Odor Eliminator
 Spray to use in between baths – It’s not healthy to bath your dogs too often so we use Aromatherapy Freshening & Shining Spray for Pets, Dog Grooming Spray, Dog Perfume, Dog Cologne & Pet Odor Eliminator in between baths. This spray smells really good.
 Vacuum for the dog ***Groomer Recomended– During shedding season its important to properly blow out your Pomskies coat with the Bissell BARKBATH Portable Dog Bath and Grooming System
Leash, Collar, Harness – The leash we use is this ladoogo 2 Pack 5 FT Heavy Duty Dog Leash with Comfortable Padded Handle Reflective Dog leashes for Medium Large Dogs The Collar we use is size small Mile High Life Dog Collar | Nylon with Reflective Three 3M Straps | Lime Green Hot Blue Pink Purple Red The Harness My favorite harness is the Kurgo Dog Hanesss. Has a Lifetime Warranty! another option for a harness is the Voyager Step-In Air Dog Harness Retractable Leash We only use The Retractable leash during training because it can hurt your hand. We will send a size small leash and collar. When puppy is older you may want to get a size medium depending on how big they get. If they are smaller, you may be good with a size small always.  Dog Tag - Don't forget to get a dog tag with their name and your phone number in case they get lost. I like this Silent Slide On Collar Tag because it doesn't come off as easy as the other dog tags. Clothes – For my Pomsky puppies I usually get size extra small or small. If he’s really big and or fluffy, sometimes you’ll need medium depending on the brand Toys - Pomskies are chewers; you’ll need plenty of chew toys. Most fabric toys, they can chew and destroy quickly. I still get them but I don’t expect them to last long. Make sure to remove all the tags and plastic before giving him the toy. Infant toys usually have hard eye balls, that can be dangerous for any dog. Try to keep kids toys out of reach.  #1 Toy For A Pomsky Puppy - Every one of our Pomskies LOVE this Nylabone toy. Great for chewing and teething. I've never had a puppy who didnt really like it. Its an all time favorite!  Another must have toy for your Pomsky - Is the Wobble Wag Giggle Ball. With just the nudge of a nose, off the ball goes! It rolls and shakes while making fun giggle sounds. This will keep your Pomsky busy for a short time.  Another Toy you must have for your Pomsky - Is the Chase N Chomp Amazing Squaeker Ball for Pets, 2.5-Inch. I get the Medium one. It has a revolutionary squeaker that makes different sounds; squeaker sound will change depending on how you squeeze the ball. It keeps our Pomskies busy
 Nuvet Powder – When I make homemade treats for my dogs, I like to put a little bit of the Nuvet Plus K-9 powder in the mix. There’s so many dog treats out there that’s unhealthy so home made is what I usually use.
Dog Bowls - Believe it or not, they make these awesome collapsible dog bowls you can fold to reduce space, its great for traveling, hiking, or just for a walk on a hot summer day to bring water or food Of course, you will need different ones for the home. I like these Wagging Tail Essentials - Medium Sized Stainless Steel Dog Bowls - Black Silicone Spillover Mat - 64oz Total (8 Cups). We use these Lixit Cage Crock, Stainless Steel bowls on the gate for water
 Eye Wipes - Using Eye wipes is an excellent way to wash your Pomskies face and get rid of any burgers attached to their fur. Baths alone are often not enough to reduce facial staining. Most stains on the face occur under the eyes and around the nose and mouth. In order to decrease facial staining, it is wise to wash your Pomskies eyes with Arava Pet Eye Wipes - for Dogs Cats Puppies & Kittens - 100 Count - Natural and Aromatherapy Medicated - Removes Dirt Crust and Discharge - Prevents Tear Stain Infections & Irritations - Soft & Gentle
Puppy Gate - Its best to have an area for the puppy with a gate indoors with a kennel and a bed. We use this 8 panel gate for outdoor use and this expandable gate for indoor use. Each home is different. Here's a few that will work. It's important to have a gate at the stairs so your puppy doesn't fall or get injured
 For the Home - I like the FURemover Broom. We use this only during shedding season. The broom works great to remove hair on most types of floors from wood, tile, vinyl, and even carpet. If your Pomsky sheds, this is a must have.
 Another must have - are Slip on Crocs Unisex Sandals or any sandles you can quickly put on to go outside with puppy during potty training.

Congratulations on your journey of becoming a fantastic dog owner. Giving your pet the attention and cleaning they need is a priority, especially if you own a dog. But bathing your dog is not always easy. Most dogs hate the thought of jumping into a tub of water and having soap all over their back and neck, and that includes Pomskies. Sometimes giving up and giving the job to a professional groomer is a wise choice. Even if you do end up paying for a groomer, you know that the next time your dog will need another bath is around the corner. Is it possible to make bath time easy and fun for your dog? Well, let's find out. Training your dog commands like sit and stay will help when bath time comes around.  Items you will needGather the following suggested items into your bathroom before you begin bathing your dog. If you are not prepared, you are allowing your Pomsky to drag wet soapy water around the house and that's never fun. All of these items are required in order to bath your Pomsky the best most efficient way possible.
 Get your Dog ReadyIt is always wise to have your dog prepared and ready when you start the bath, and that means clipping your dog's nails and brushing its hair. If you cut your dog's nails before the bath, it will help so that you don't get hurt badly if they try to escape. Wear clothing that you are not planning on wearing again, ones that can be ruined. You can now begin to bring your Pomsky into the bathroom or room you plan on bathing your dog in. Practice a few commands with your dog and give it a few praises before you make it enter the tub. If your Pomsky does not know any commands yet, that is okay. You can praise your Pomsky for other things they do. After this, you will help your dog enter the tub. Make sure that the water is not too hot and not too cold. You will also want your Pomsky to be able to hear and feel the water before it begins its bath. Slowly and gently begin to help your dog enter the tub. If your Pomsky persists, you can start by entering the tub first to show your dog everything is okay. Once your Pomsky is in the tub, start by rubbing its shoulders and back. Gently pour shampoo on the coat, making sure you do not get it any on your dog's head yet. While you are rubbing your dog's fur, you can slowly rub shampoo onto the head and ears. Be very cautious and try not to get any shampoo in its eyes. You will also want to put cotton balls into your Pomskies ears to help so that water does not get inside (remove them when done). If you put a few drops of mineral oil in your dog's eyes, it will help so that they don't get irritated as much. You can apply the mineral oil each time you think your Pomsky has gotten some soap into its eyes. After covering your Pomskies coat with shampoo and soap, you can rinse it off using a bowl, cup or Shower-head. Make sure you remove all soap so that your Pomsky doesn't have to deal with irritated skin later.  Finish upAfter you are done giving your Pomsky a bath you will start to dry its fur and coat. Get a towel and begin to rub and dry your dog's coat. If your Pomsky has longer fur, you will want to use a blow dryer on low to help. Once you are done with that, you may have a lot of fur leftover on your bathroom floor; that's okay. It's better kept in the bathroom than in other areas of the house. Most of the time after a dog has been given a bath; they will feel fresh and rejuvenated and may start to act hyper or run around the house for a bit. This is normal and usually doesn't cause damage unless your Pomsky hasn't been dried off yet.  Tips to make bathing your Pomsky easierBring a friendIf you've ever tried bathing a dog before you know that it can get hectic really fast and super stressful. Having a friend that can hold your dog and help it to stay still longer will make a world of difference. Get your water at the right temperatureIf water is too hot or cold, it may shock your dog and be harder in the future to try to bath them again. Water should be warmer than room temperature but colder than your regular baths. Massage your dogIf you make your Pomsky feel relaxed and happy, it will be much more comfortable in the future to bath your dog again. Dogs love being scratched and given a massage. Getting good at training your dog takes time, patience, and energy. Not only will teaching tricks to your Pomsky benefit you, but it is also very entertaining for your dog. Pomskies love to learn and be trained, but it may not seem like that at the beginning. There are basic rules that each dog needs to learn to get their commands down to a T. These consist of Lead, Reward, Committed Practice, and Praise. Some of the best tricks your dog will be able to learn with these steps are roll-over, spin, crawl, leave it, high-five, stay, heel, lay down, and speak. In this article, we will be teaching the steps to sit, stay, and roll-over. Make sure to have all the supplies you want to use for your training. If your Pomsky is suffering from separation anxiety this may make it harder to train your dog.  Master your Pomsky tricks (4 steps)Lead When you first start to train your dog, you will want each word to mean something to your dog. Make sure you communicate whatever it is you want them to do when you are training your Pomsky. If you are training your Pomsky to roll-over, you will want to help them roll over while you say the word roll-over (Do not use force). You can do this using your voice or a hand signal of some sort. If you try training your Pomsky without communication, it won’t work. The best way to start getting the hang of this is to start with the command “sit”. You will hold a treat in your hand and make sure your Pomsky can see it. When you know that your dog is aware of the treat, you will hold it in a your fist so they won’t be able to see it but can still smell it. This will make your Pomsky want to get the treat from your hand. While your dog does this, you will raise your hand still while touching its nose and gently moving your hand towards their back until they sit. Right as they start to sit, you will say the command “SIT” and give them the treat while saying “good boy/girl.” Reward Make sure to find your dog’s favorite type of food and treat and use that while you are training. When you have their favorite food it will be the most beneficial during their training. Usually, a dogs favorite kind of treat contains meat or kibble. If you don’t want to buy dog treats, you can always use deli meats or other types of meat during training. Committed Practice Take at least 15 mins out of each day to train your Pomsky. The more you practice, the easier it is for your dog to remember their commands. You will want to split up your training between 5-minute lessons throughout the day maybe even longer. Try to have at least three sessions a day with five or more minutes each. Morning, evening, and night will be the best times to practice each session. Make sure that you keep to a schedule. If your Pomsky knows what time to plan on practice, it will help your dog learn faster and keep its routine. Praise Praise is a part of rewarding but is a little different. While you want to give your Pomsky treats when they follow your command, you will also want to make sure you use vocal rewards as well. Saying “Good job” “Well done” or giving them a scratch and belly rub should also be included. While you will be using treats mostly for the first week or so, you will start to use less and less so that your Pomsky knows he needs to obey the command without receiving a treat. Never use punishments or yelling to get your dog to do something when it is not getting your command right. It is essential to keep calm and be patient, as your Pomsky is learning. You will never force or help your Pomsky with a trick other than moving your hand with their nose.  Individual tricksBecause we’ve already gone over how to teach your Pomsky to sit, we will start with the simple “Stay” command. Having a schedule and training your dog will also help them get the proper sleep at night. Stay For dogs that already have a few tricks they’ve picked up, teaching him to stay will be easy. If this is your dog’s first lesson, it’s not a difficult trick to master. This trick is handy when you are trying to get your Pomsky to wait for its food or if visitors are coming over. Start by helping your dog to get in the sit position. Praise your Pomsky and give it a treat. While your dog is in the sit position you will have a treat in your other hand pinched between your thumb and index finger and say the command “Stay” count to three in your head and then say “Good boy/girl” and give your Pomsky a treat. Roll-over For this trick, you will need 3-5 treats at a time. This trick is split up into 3-4 steps follow as listed. Step 1 Lead your Pomsky by showing it a treat and then grasping it in your hand. Press the treat up to your dog’s nose and pull to the ground. Your Pomsky should then follow your hand with its nose and be in a laying down position. If they are sitting down, you will need to wait until they are lying. You will then say “Good boy/girl” and let your dog have the treat. Step 2 For this step, you will need to follow your hand from the ground to your Pomskies back shoulder. Once your dog’s nose is facing his shoulder, you will say “Good boy/girl” and give it a treat. Step 3 Once your Pomsky has reached its back shoulder, you will start to move your hand towards your dogs spine. Once your dog’s nose is near its spine, you will say “Good boy/girl” and release the treat. Step 4 Once your Pomskies nose is at his spine, you will move your hand to the floor on the opposite side you started on, and that is when he will finish his rolling over. To help with this, you will need to put the treat on the floor away from your Pomsky. Then your Pomsky will be able to make the finishing motion. After you have completed all the steps, practice it 4 or 5 more times, and then you will begin to eliminate the middle steps one at a time until you are only left with one motion. Do not ever force or use harsh tones to get your Pomsky to roll-over. If you do this while training, your Pomsky will begin to resist later and will have less fun. To do the other tricks, you will need to follow the same pattern and use rewards for each small step.
